UP chairmen want to use light arms for security

BANDARBAN, July 25 (UNB): Four union parishad (UP) chairmen of Thanchi Upazila demanded of the authorities to give local public representatives permission to use light arms to ensure their personal security and the security of local people and facilitate their movement in inaccessible areas.
They made the demand at a press conference at a local hotel Monday. Thanchi Sadar UP chairman Khamlai Mro read out a written statement at the conference.
They also announced to form union-based terrorism resistance committees aimed at halting the activities of miscreants with the assistance of administration.
They also claimed that the kidnapped Danida official Sumon was rescued with the joint efforts of security forces and UP chairmen.
They have become the targets of criminals for what they said cooperating with the security forces.
They called for ensuring the security of local people and increasing the number of army and BDR camps for halting cultivation of poppy and arms trading.
Remakri UP Chairman Apru Mong, Tindu UP Chairman Mong Pru Aung Marma and others were present at the press conference.
