US supports poll roadmap

TANGAIL, Oct 26 (UNB): US Charge de Affaires Geeta Pasi said Friday the United States supports the caretaker government's initiatives to implement the election roadmap towards restoration of democracy in the country.
Speaking at a function on the premises of Elenga Jamindar House in Kalihati Upazila, she said easing of ban on indoor politics and voters' registration are the primary steps for holding free and fair elections in 2008.
"The United States supports all these activities for elections," she said.
Justice Debesh Bhattacharya Foundation and Uday Smriti Human Welfare Fund jointly organized the function to distribute Debesh Bhattacharya and Chitra Bhattacharya Gold Medals.
Uday Foundation president and ambassador-designate to Bangladesh Permanent Mission in Geneva Dr Debapriya Bhatta-charya presided over the function.
The US diplomat praised the artistic designs of Tangail sari and said that alongside weaving these beautiful saris, efforts for strengthening democracy must be taken.
She also assured US support to initiatives for alleviating poverty in the country.
Tangail DC Akhtar Ali Sardar, Kalihati UNO Saifullahil Azam, Irina Bhattachariya, Akkhoy Bhowmik and Lutfar Rahman Matin also spoke at the function.
Geeta Pasi later visited the Lutfar Rahman Matin Women College at Elenga and some weaving factories at Bajitpur and Pathrail in Tangail.
