Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta alleged on Friday that a vested quarter carried out the killings in Nayaranganj, Feni and Laxmipur with the intention of jeopardising democratic practices in the country, reports BSS.

"That quarter wants to create barrier to the country's constitutional and democratic practices. Remain alert about their evil intention. The culprits behind these killings should be arrested immediately and brought to justice," he said.

Suranjit Sengupta, a senior parliamentarian of ruling AL, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial meeting in the city.

Bangabandhu Academy organised the meeting at the auditorium of the Diploma Engineers Institution at Kakrail in the capital paying deep homage to AL leader Ilyas Ahmed Chowdhury.

President of the organisation Humayun Kabir Mizi chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by AL assistant secretaries Asaduzzaman and Rezaul Karim and Samyabadi Dal leader Haroon Chowdhury.

Suranjit Sengupta said, "Those who were behind the killings are the enemies of democracy. There is no scope to give them shelter. The three killing incidents were interlinked. The government should take a close political look into the matter. The persons involved in the killings, including the main accused in Narayanganj sever-murder case, Nur Hossain, should be brought to justice."

He said, "Residents of Narayanganj, Feni and Laxmipur are agitated. The good news is that the RAB officers involved in the Narayanganj killings were arrested. It's a victory of spontaneous protests of the people of Narayanganj, which is an important industrial city. We want peace be restored in Narayanganj and the rule of law established."

The senior AL leader said, "Neither the Awami League nor the government would take responsibility of such killing incidents. It's the responsibility of all the citizens to hand over those criminals to the law. We hope that the rule of law would be established in the country.''
