Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has urged all to take a fresh vow to protect the regained sovereignty for all time.
He made the appeal when he was requested to make comments on the 250th anniversary of the historic Battle of Plassey in the city Saturday, reports UNB.
"Today we recall Plassey not because we want to look to the past but because we want to look forward to the future," he said on the event in which Bengal lost its independence to the then colonial British force this day in 1757.
"The sovereignty we lost at Plassey, we have now regained, and we must protect it for all time. We must use our freedom to lift up the quality of our lives, and improve the lot of the common man and woman."
The foreign adviser further said: "At all times we must cherish our independence, and make sure that the fate of our destiny does not pass into foreign hands ever again."
