Expressing his determination to take Bangladesh forward on the path of reform, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam says, "Bangladesh will never return to where it was before Aug 5", reports bdnews24.com.
He said, "We are united against the collaborators of 1971. We, the people of Bangladesh, the youth of Bangladesh are also united against the collaborators of 2024."
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after presenting a floral tribute at the National Memorial in Savar along with leaders and activists of his party on Tuesday afternoon.
He also commented that the "fallen fascist forces" are trying to destabilise Bangladesh and sabotage the upcoming parliamentary elections.
He said, "The people of this land have fought for centuries for freedom, for their human dignity, for sovereignty. In 1971, we had to go through a people's war. Even though we received an independent land, the people of Bangladesh were repeatedly deceived over the last 54 years of history."
The top NCP leader said he believes that the mass uprising of 2024 took place against fascism because it was "unable" to build a country that fulfilled the promises of the Liberation War.
He said he was determined to build a new Bangladesh by "holding to" the historical struggles of 1947 to 1971 and 2024.
Expressing his desire for a "mass movement" in favour of reforms in the upcoming elections and referendum, he said: "NCP MP candidates will go door-to-door to speak out in favour of reforms and the Shapla Koli (water lily) symbol."
Nahid also expressed his frustration with the interim government's failure to arrest the assassins of Inqilab Moncho leader and Dhaka-8 hopeful Sharif Osman Hadi. He said, "We have to ensure our own security. After Aug 5, we ensured our own security. There was no government, no police at the time. Bangladesh is now heading towards that situation again."
