CHITTAGONG, Aug 30 (UNB): Teachers loyal to the BNP-Jamaat political line-up triumphed in Saturday's election to Chittagong University Teachers' Association (CUTA) as their trademark White panel bagged six posts, including president and treasurer.

Their main rivals in the Awami League-backed Yellow panel, however, stood close by capturing five seats, including general secretary and joint general secretary. Dr Mohammad Kamal Hossain from the White camp was elected the president by bagging 251 votes while his rival Dr Ershad Kamal Khan from the Yellow got 239.

Prof Md Abu Taher Chowdhury was elected vice-president from the White panel with 269 votes against 255 of Prof Dr Mohamad Qamrul Huda of the Yellow panel.

Abu Taiyab Chowdhury from the same panel was elected treasurer with 259 votes in his bag while his rival Dr Khaled Mejbauzzaman from the Yellow got 225 votes.

Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury from the Yellow panel was elected joint general secretary bagging 260 votes while his rival from the White Mohammad Motaj Uddin Quaderi got 225 votes.

The two rival camps in the election held at the CU administrative building equally shared the six member seats on the CUTA executive body.

Some 505 votes out of total 551 were cast in the election during the voting from 9:00am to 2:00pm. The white-panelist teachers of Dhaka University (DU) earlier this month swept the DU Dean elections, clinching all but two posts out of total ten. Awami League-backed and leftwing teachers shared the leftover two.
