Sramik-Karmachari-Peshajibi-Muktijoddha Samannay Parishad Friday threatened to lay siege to BNP chairperson's Gulshan office unless her party withdraws the ongoing blockade considering the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination scheduled to start from February 2.

"You (Khaleda Zia) must stop violence that continues in the name of blockade and hartals… otherwise we will besiege you inside your office by disconnecting water and power supply lines," Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, also convener of the parishad, said at a rally held at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.

Due to the ongoing blockade, enforced by the BNP-led alliance, a number of people, including 15 transport workers died and many others were injured, he said.

Mr Khan called upon the BNP-led 20-party alliance to shun the path of such destructive politics. "Political unrest along with violence has worsened the situation of the country. It is also hurting the country's economy."

He also urged the countrymen to remain vigil so that none could create anarchy during the SSC examination, and to catch and hand over those who hurl bombs at police, RAB, BGB and Ansar members.

The shipping minister urged the people to hate those getting involved in terrorist acts in the name of democracy and hold rallies and meetings against violence and stay alert on the streets alongside the law enforcement agencies to keep vehicular movement smooth.

He announced a set of programmes to be observed from January 31, 2015 to February 7, 2015 across the country. As part of the programmes, the parishad will hold a rally in front of the National Press Club today (Saturday) in protest against the ongoing hartals and blockade, being enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

The other programmes include holding rallies at Shaheed Minars in all the district headquarters on February 3 with participation of people from all walks of life.

Owners, officials, employees and workers of all offices and industries will throng the streets and stay there from 12:45 pm to 1:00 pm on February 5 in protest against hartals and blockade.

Drivers of all modes of vehicles will honk horns for two minutes from 12:45 pm on February 5 protesting against violence and killings of innocent people in the name of hartals and blockade.
