KHULNA, Aug 25 (UNB): Voter registration with photographs in Khulna City Corporation, stalled Thursday following the imposition of curfew, will begin tomorrow (Sunday) as part of a nationwide task in preparation for holding the stalled elections.
"It was halted due to changed situation", District Election Officer (DEO) Mohammad Mujibar Rahman said.
The first phase of voter registration with photograph and preparation for national identity (ID) cards began in wards 5,11,13,14,16 and 17 from August 17 with assistance of the joint forces and the district administration and technical support of Warid Telecom.
But curfew made it impossible to begin the second phase of voter-registration work from Thursday as per schedule, the DEO said.
The multinational Warid Telecom donated 500 laptop computers with scanners and printers to the election commission's voter list and national identity (NID) card project, which would accelerate the massive voter-listing task.
The donation, worth more than Tk 20 million (2.0 crore), is the highest contribution by a private company to the project, which kicked off from Rajshahi after a model scheme in a Gazipur municipality.
The equipment will be first used for the voter listing in Khulna.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda has appreciated the telecom company for extending helping hands for the voter-list project.
