BAGERHAT, July 18 (UNB): Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kayser Kamal on Saturday called on all stakeholders to work together to strengthen the rule of law, saying the legal community has always stood for justice and against injustice.
He made the remarks while addressing an exchange of views with members of the Bagerhat District Bar Association at its auditorium.
"We believe a democratic system of governance has now been established in the country. The next challenge is to ensure the rule of law, and everyone must work together to achieve that," he said.
The Deputy Speaker said many people had been subjected to harassment in the past solely because of their political beliefs, while others were deprived of constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights.
"Many political activists who struggled while facing what they claimed were false cases were subjected to harassment, and measures were taken to deny them legal remedies," he said.
Paying tribute to those who lost their lives during the July uprising, Kayser Kamal urged all to work toward building the Bangladesh they had envisioned.
"The people who sacrificed their lives during the 2024 Mass Uprising dreamed of a better Bangladesh. It is our responsibility to fulfil that aspiration," he said.
The Deputy Speaker also cautioned against repeating past practices in which some individuals allegedly used bar associations and the legal system for personal gain.
"We fought to establish the rule of law. We must not undermine legal norms ourselves," he said, adding that close cooperation between the bench and the bar is essential for ensuring justice.
"The rule of law can only be firmly established when the bench and the bar work shoulder to shoulder," he added.
The meeting, chaired by Bar Association Convener Advocate Md Mahfuzur Rahman Lahu, was also addressed by Bagerhat Zila Parishad Administrator Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain, former Bar Association President Advocate Wahiduzzaman Dipu, Member Secretary Advocate Mosharraf Hossain Montu, and Public Prosecutor and Joint Convener Advocate Mahabub Morshed Lalon, among others.
Earlier in the day, Kayser Kamal inaugurated the Skill Institute of Technology (Skill IT), a vocational training centre, opposite the Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner's Office.
Speaking at the inauguration, he highlighted the importance of developing a skilled workforce to meet the country's future needs.
