A writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) Tuesday seeking its direction to media not to publish, broadcast or air the statements of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, now living in London, report agencies.
Nasrin Siddiqa Leena, a Supreme Court (SC) lawyer, filed the writ petition in the form of public interest litigation (PIL) on the ground that since Tarique, a fugitive accused in the eye of law, cannot enjoy freedom of expression.
The statement of a person who remains absconding is not eligible for media coverage, she added.
Among others, the Ministry of Information, Tarique Rahman and all media houses have been made respondents to the PIL petition.
Talking to reporters, the petitioner said the matter might come up for hearing on Wednesday (today) before an HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Raza-Ul Hoque and Justice ATM Saifur Rahman.
