Following the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family on August 15, 1975 and subsequent killing of the four national leaders in Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975 an inquiry commission was formed in London. But it was not allowed to visit Bangladesh by the then government headed by Ziaur Rahman, reports BSS.
The four national leaders who were gunned down inside prison were Syed Nazrul Islam, Captain Mansur Ali, Tajuddin Ahmed and AHM Qamaruzzaman.
The formation of the commission was mentioned in the book "Bangabandhu Murder: Facts and Documents", authored by Prof Abu Sayeed.
Prof Sayeed wrote in his book that the initiative failed to work because the then government did not want it.
The commission was formed following an appeal by the children of the deceased leaders. They included the two surviving children of Bangabandhu - current Prime Minister (PM) and Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina, and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana-and the sons of Captain Mansur Ali and Syed Nazrul Islam, Dr Mohammad Selim and Syed Ashraful Islam, respectively. Ashraf is currently minister for local government, rural development and cooperatives and general secretary of AL.
The commission was headed by Sir Thomas Williams, MP. The other members were Jeffrey Thomas and Solicitor Abrow Rose.
