Acting President of the Awami League (AL) Zillur Rahman has demanded of the government to release detained party president Sheikh Hasina and lift the State of Emergency immediately.
"The caretaker government claims the country is running normally. Why the people then celebrated Eid under the State of Emergency? Why the country is still being run under the emergency?" he said while exchanging Eid greetings with people from all walks of life at his Gulshan residence in the city Sunday, reports UNB.
Party leaders, workers and well-wishers met Zillur Rahman to greet him on the occasion of holy Eid-ul-Fitr. This was the first time the AL leaders and workers celebrated Eid without party chief Sheikh Hasina.
Greeting the countrymen on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Zillur said they celebrated the Eid festival amid a sad situation, as party leader Sheikh Hasina could not join them.
He demanded immediate release of Sheikh Hasina, now under detention in an extortion case.
Among others, AL leaders Syed Ashraful Islam, Mukul Bose, Maj Gen (retd) M Subid Ali Bhuiyan, Advocate Sahara Khatun and Mirza MA Jalil were present.
However, none of the party presidium members met Zillur Rahman.
