Joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Monday BNP has enforced countrywide hartal to relieve its chairperson Khaleda Zia of the graft case, hinder the case against Tarique Rahman and to appease the war criminals, reports BSS.
"Monday's hartal was not called for the people's interest. BNP never sided with the people, it's not with the people now, and never will be," he said while speaking at a press conference at the political office of Awami League president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city. The press conference was convened to express the ruling AL's reaction over the hartal called by the BNP-led 20-party combine.
Commenting that BNP wants to come to power through the backdoor, AL joint general secretary said, "After assumption of power, BNP looted public money, killed democracy and exploited people."
In reply to a question, Nanak said, "Awami League never gives lip-service on democracy but exercises democracy in the party-fold and believes in democratic rights of others. If BNP opts for peaceful programme and refrain from destruction of private and public properties then there will be nothing to say from Awami League."
The AL leader said, "Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina passed the hard test of January 5 (national polls) and created momentum in the country's economic activities. If any programme is announced to jeopardise the current flow of national economy then it will be resisted.
