Three deer poachers held with trawler, traps in Sundarbans

KHULNA, Jan 14 (BSS): Forest guards have arrested three deer poachers from the Kochikhali area of the eastern Sundarbans, seizing an engine-driven trawler and a large quantity of deer-catching traps.

The arrest was made during a routine patrol conducted Tuesday night (last night). The detainees were produced before the Bagerhat Court on Wednesday.

According to Forest Department sources, a patrol team led by Forester Md Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Kochikhali Wildlife Sanctuary under the Eastern Sundarbans Forest Division, was on regular river patrol around 10 pm on Tuesday. When forest guards signaled an engine-driven trawler to stop near the outer Sukpara area of Kochikhali, four poachers jumped into the forest and fled away. Forest guards managed to detain three others from the trawler. A search of the vessel led to the seizure of 600 feet of deer-catching noose traps, a cock sheet, two knives, ten plastic sacks and other hunting equipment.
