Need better management of TCB sales

February 28, 2026 00:00:00

A chaotic situation recently erupted during the sale of subsidised products by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Uttara in the capital. A large crowd gathered around a TCB truck to purchase essential commodities at affordable prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, when low- and middle-income families struggle to cope with rising market prices.

Due to poor crowd management and inadequate supervision, the situation quickly turned disorderly. The absence of clear queues, security personnel and proper coordination created confusion among buyers. At one point, the truck driver attempted to move to a different location to escape the overwhelming crowd. Desperate consumers began running after the moving vehicle, with some even hanging onto its back in an attempt to secure essential goods. Tragically, a woman fell onto the road while trying to hold onto the truck, putting her at serious risk of injury and exposing the dangerous consequences of mismanagement.

This incident highlights significant flaws in the current distribution system. During Ramadan, when demand for essential commodities rises sharply, the authorities must ensure careful planning, effective supervision and strict crowd control measures. Adequate police presence, organised queues, token-based distribution, designated waiting areas and fixed selling points could greatly reduce chaos and ensure orderly access for beneficiaries.

The government's initiative to provide essential goods at subsidised rates is undoubtedly commendable and necessary for supporting vulnerable citizens. However, without proper implementation and monitoring, such well-intentioned programmes may unintentionally create hardship and safety risks. The authorities concerned must therefore take immediate steps to improve the management of TCB product distribution to ensure safety, fairness and dignity for all citizens.
