Suffering of the poor in winter

January 11, 2026 00:00:00

The extreme cold wave sweeping across the country this winter has far exceeded normal seasonal patterns. Dense morning fog, icy winds, and prolonged sunless days are severely disrupting the lives of ordinary people, turning winter into a silent humanitarian disaster-particularly in the northern and northwestern regions where temperatures have dropped to single digits.

The worst sufferers are the poor and the uprooted people. People living under open skies, daily wage earners, rickshaw pullers, and other members of the working class are facing immense hardship. As economic activity slows, many are losing their already fragile sources of income. The situation is even more acute in rural areas, where access to winter clothing, healthcare, and awareness remains limited. Although government and private relief initiatives exist, they fall far short of actual needs. Delays and poor coordination in relief distribution are further aggravating the crisis.

The government's responsibility must go beyond weather forecasts. The government should identify cold-prone areas, distribute winter clothing, launch mobile medical services and open temporary shelters. At the same time, public representatives, administrators, and affluent citizens must come forward in a spirit of humanity. Winter may be inevitable, but suffering caused by neglect is not.
