5.4-magnitude quake jolts city, other parts

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake jolted the city and other parts of the country on Friday noon, for the third day in a row since Wednesday, according to the Met office.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said in an update that the epicentre of Friday's earthquake was Asashuni Upazila of Satkhira district. Satkhira shook violently. Many people panicked.

The earthquake was felt at 1:52:29 pm. The tremors lasted a few seconds. The distance from the epicentre to the Agargaon Meteorological Department in Dhaka is 188 kilometres.

The Meteorological Department said that the magnitude of the moderate earthquake was 5.4 on the Richter scale.

However, The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the magnitude of the earthquake at the epicentre was 5.3.

Tremors were also felt in other districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, according to Indian media reports. The magnitude of the earthquake there was 5 on the Richter scale.

The previous earthquake was felt at 12:45 pm on Thursday. That earthquake had a magnitude of 3.7 and its epicentre was in Sikkim, India.

Before that, another 5.1-magnitude earthquake was felt in various parts of the country, including Dhaka, on Wednesday night. The epicentre of Wednesday's earthquake was Myanmar. It was also a moderate earthquake.
