NCP leader found dead in city hostel

Police have recovered the hanging body of a National Citizen Party (NCP) leader from a female student hostel in the capital's Hazaribagh area.
The deceased was identified as Jannatara Rumi, 30, joint coordinator of the NCP's Dhanmondi thana unit. She was the daughter of Md Jakir Hossain of the Nazirpur area under Patnitala upazila in Naogaon.
Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh Police Station, said police were informed around 4:10am on Thursday and recovered the body from a room on the fifth floor of Jannati Girls' Hostel on Jhigatala Old Kachabazar Road.
He said the room, where Rumi lived alone, was found locked from the inside. The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The officer added that it was not yet clear whether the death was a case of suicide or murder.
Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Dhanmondi zone, Jisanul Haque, told reporters that Rumi may have taken her own life due to frustration stemming from family-related issues.
He said police were initially suspecting suicide, but stressed that the exact cause of death would be determined after the completion of the investigation and receipt of the post-mortem report.
