Dhaka University (DU) celebrated the Independence Day on Thursday (March 26, 2026) with due solemnity through a set of programmes, paying tributes to the spirit of the Liberation War.
The day began early in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag at 6:00 am across all central buildings, residential halls, and hostels of the university.
Prior to that, at 5:45 am, teachers, students, officials, employees, and alumni assembled at Smriti Chirantan Square.
From there, they proceeded in a solemn procession to the National Martyrs' Memorial under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, where they placed wreaths to honour the martyrs of the Liberation War.
Special prayers were offered after Zuhr prayers at the university's central mosque seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of the martyrs. Similar prayers were held at other places of worship. The authorities also distributed sweets among children of the university employees as part of the day's observances.
In the evening, a vibrant cultural programme was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium at 6:30 pm, featuring patriotic songs, recitations, and dance performances inspired by the Liberation War.
As part of the extended programme, a discussion titled "Significance of the Great Independence and National Day" is scheduled to be held on Sunday (March 29) at 11:30 am at the TSC auditorium, with the vice-chancellor in the chair.
Earlier, on March 25, the university observed Genocide Day commemorating the Black Night with due respect.
On Wednesday night, candles were lit at Smriti Chirantan Square under the leadership of the vice-chancellor to pay homage to the martyrs.
