Veggies, broiler chicken get dearer, onion prices decline last week

Prices of vegetables and chicken increased in the city's kitchen markets in the last week, According to trading sources.

Meanwhile, the supply of locally-grown seed onion (murikata) increased last week, leading to a significant fall in its prices.

Onions were available at Tk 50 per kg in some markets on Friday.

In groceries, murikata onions were sold at Tk 60-70 per kg depending on the quality, down by about Tk 10 per kg over the previous week.

Jakir Ahsan, a Mohammadpur Krishi Market-based trader, predicted a further fall in the onion prices in the days ahead.

Meanwhile, prices of newly harvested potatoes rose by Tk 10-15 a kg at the retail levels.

Potatoes were selling between Tk 30 and Tk 40 per kg at the end of last week compared to that of Tk 20 to 25 per kg a week ago.

Fahim Hosain, a trader at Mohammadpur-Beribadh area, told the FE that supply of early harvested potato declined in the market as a section of farmers was shifting their harvests to cold storages.

The price will remain above Tk 30 for next month, he predicted.

On the other hand, the prices of vegetables also increased noticeably in the last week.

Small-sized cauliflowers were selling at Tk 40-50 per piece from Tk 30-40 a few days back.

Wholesale and retail traders said although the chilling weather eased in many districts, vegetable supplies did not increase in the market accordingly.

Normal quality of brinjals was being sold at Tk 60-70 per kg and that of better quality Tk 80-110 per kg on Friday, Tk 10-15 a kg hike.

On the other hand, the country beans were selling between Tk 50 and Tk 80 per kg against the previous rates of Tk 40 to 70.

The prices of bottle gourd, which was selling at Tk 50-60 per piece just a week back, increased to Tk 80-100 a piece, depending on the market.

Despite the arrival of seasonal harvests in the market, tomato prices remained their previous high on Friday.

Tomatoes were selling at Tk 80-100 per kg, depending on its quality and markets.

However, prices of locally produced carrots fell slightly with the item selling at Tk 50-60 a kg.

On the other hand, prices of broiler chicken also increased to Tk 175-180 per kg, up from Tk 165-170 per kg a week ago.

However, prices of Pakistani/Sonali chicken remained almost unchanged at previous rates of Tk 260-290 per kg.

Meanwhile, prices of rice, beef, sugar, edible oil, pulses remained more or less static in the last week, according to trading sources.
