CHATTOGRAM, Dec 20: Unidentified miscreants have set fire to the village home of former minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram.
During the arson attack, a private car was burned in the incident and a two-storey house was partially damaged.
The arson occurred at midnight of Friday at the politician's ancestral home in Sadek Nagar village under Gumanmardan union.
Locals said a group suddenly arrived at the scene, vandalised the property, set it on fire, and then fled.
Upon receiving news of the blaze, nearby residents rushed to the spot and managed to bring the fire under control, though the private car had already been reduced to ashes. Later, a team from the Hathazari Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived and fully extinguished the remaining flames. Two rooms in the house were also damaged in the fire.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Md Tariq Aziz confirmed the incident, stating that he visited the site promptly after receiving the report around midnight. "We are investigating to identify those responsible for the arson," he said.
