The government is planning to procure new aircraft to modernise the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as part of efforts to enhance service quality and expand operations.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam made the disclosure on Wednesday while responding to a question during the question-and-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad.
She said Biman was currently operating as a profitable concern, highlighting that the airline was not only earning revenue from flight operations but also generating significant income by providing ground handling services to both domestic and international carriers.
"Biman Bangladesh Airlines is now a profitable entity overall. However, there is still scope to further modernise its operational activities and management to bring it fully up to international standards," the minister said.
Addressing existing challenges, Afroza Khanam identified aircraft shortage as one of the main constraints facing the airline. She noted that the government was actively working to resolve the issue.
According to Biman's network and fleet plan, the process of procuring new aircraft is underway, while older aircraft is being gradually phased out. In the interim period, the airline is leasing aircraft to maintain regular flight schedules until new additions arrive.
The minister also emphasized the government's focus on improving passenger services. As part of this initiative, an online ticketing system has been introduced, significantly reducing long-standing hassles faced by passengers in purchasing tickets.
In addition, steps have been taken to enhance service quality both on the ground and in-flight, including behavioural training for staff and closer monitoring to ensure better customer experience.
The move reflects the government's broader aim of transforming Biman into a modern, globally competitive airline.
