Workers from Beximco Industrial Park have blocked the highway in Gazipur's Sarabo for a second consecutive day, pressing for overdue wages, reports bdnews24.com.
They began descending on the Chandra-Nabinagar highway in Sarabo's Chakrabarty area from 9am on Sunday, said Saiful Islam, the chief of Kashimpur Police Station in the Gazipur Metropolitan Area.
According to OC Saiful, as many as 41,000 employees work at the garment and ceramic factories at Beximco Industrial Park.
Meanwhile, the workers of the garment factories have been protesting on the streets for a week, demanding unpaid wages for the month of October.
On Saturday, protesters occupied the Chandra-Nabinagar highway for 10 hours before lifting the blockade around 7:15pm.
The roadblock on Sunday led to severe congestion on both sides of the highway, causing significant delays and frustration for commuters.
However, many vehicles later used the Dhaka-Tangail highway as an alternate route to avoid the traffic.
OC Saiful said: "Police are at the spot and are trying to control the situation by talking to the workers, but the workers say they will not leave the highway until they are assured of the payment of their arrears."
