With the US withdrawal from the WHO officially due to take effect next week, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the move is "a loss for the United States and it's also a loss for the rest of the world", adding that it "makes the US unsafe... and makes the rest of the world unsafe". — AFP

WASHINGTON, Jan 14: Senate Republicans are facing intense pressure from President Donald Trump to vote down a war powers resolution Wednesday that is aimed at limiting the president's ability to carry out further military action against Venezuela. Five GOP senators joined with Democrats to advance the resolution last week, but Trump has lashed out at the defectors as he tries to head off passage of the bill. Democrats are forcing the vote after US troops captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid earlier this month. — AP

MOSCOW, Jan 14 (AFP): Two people were killed and several wounded as a result of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian border regions, local authorities said Wednesday. In the city of Rostov-on-Don, a drone attack sparked a fire in a residential building and the body of a man was found in the charred remains of one of the apartments, the local governor, Yuri Sliussar, wrote on Telegram. Four other people were wounded in strikes elsewhere in the Rostov region, which sparked fires in several industrial areas.

SINGAPORE, Jan 14: Singapore's parliament voted to remove opposition chief Pritam Singh from his post as leader of the opposition on Wednesday after he was convicted of lying to lawmakers. Indranee Rajah, the house leader and member of the ruling People's Action Party, submitted a motion to declare Singh, head of the Workers' Party, unsuitable to continue as opposition chief given his "dishonourable and unbecoming" conduct. — Reuters
