35th Nat'l Athletics begins in city today

The Walton 35th National Athletics Championship, organised by Bangladesh Athletics Federation, will begin today (Wednesday) on the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city, reports UNB.
State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Capt (retd) AB Tajul Islam will inaugurate the two-day meet in the afternoon.
Some 500 athletes are likely to compete in 36 events of the meet - 22 for men and 14 for women.
President of Bangladesh Athletics Federation ASM Ali Kabir disclosed the details at a press conference in the city Tuesday.
Federation General Secretary Shah Alam, Vice-Presidents Ali Imam Tapan and Tofazzel Hossain, and Director (Media) of the meet's sponsor Walton Humayan Kabir were also present.
Of the total budget of Tk 800,000, meet's sponsor Walton has provided Tk 300,000.
The sponsor will also provide colour TV to the best male and female athletes of the meet.
Besides, former national athlete Ariful Haque also announced cash reward of Tk 10,000 each for two best athletes of the meet.
The meet's main attractions - men's and women's 100 meter sprints - will be held Thursday at 4:00 pm and 4:45 pm respectively with the fastest man and woman receiving Walton VDO players from the sponsor.
