69-member BD contingent to participate in C’wealth Games in Glasgow

A 69-member contingent will represent Bangladesh in the 20th Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 4 this year, keeping their eyes on shooting, boxing and gymnastics medals, reports UNB.

The first batch of Bangladesh contingent with country's most prospective shooting team will leave Dhaka for Glasgow on July 14.  They will be followed by weightlifting and cycling teams on July 19, swimming, boxing, table tennis and badminton on July 20, and wrestling and athletics teams on July 24.

Some 4,500 athletes from 71 countries will compete in 17 disciplines of sports at 14 venues in Glasgow and adjoining areas.

Senior Vice President of Bangladesh Olympic Association Harun-ur-Rashid has been named as the chef de-mission of Bangladesh contingent comprising 30 athletes, 11 team officials, nine contingent officials, and 19 other delegates and contingent members.

Bangladesh team will compete in a record 10 disciplines of sports-athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, table tennis, shooting, swimming, wrestling and weightlifting-in the mega games of Commonwealth countries.

BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza gave details of Bangladesh contingent at a press conference at the Dutch-Bangla Auditorium of BOA Thursday.

Chef De Mission of Bangladesh contingent Harun-ur Rashid, general secretary of Shooting Federation Enthekhabul Hamid Apu, general secretary of Boxing Federation Quddus Khan, general secretary of Weightlifting Federation Mohiuddin Ahmed and general of Cycling Federation Imtiaz Khan Babul also spoke on the occasion.

Addressing the newsmen, Syed Shahed Reza said: "For good results in the ensuing Commonwealth Games, we have conducted a long-term residential training camp for the games prospective events-shooting and boxing-from January 10 under foreign coaches, and also conducting adequate training sessions, mostly with foreign trainers for other eight sports too."
