Defending champions Abahani Limited had to sweat hard as they scraped past Shuktara Jubo Sangsad of Narayanganj by a solitary goal in the Citycell Bangladesh League at the Narayanganj Stadium Wednesday, reports BSS.
Both teams failed to break the deadlock at the breather.
Reigning champions Abahani looked too tired in the humid afternoon and hardly could they create any clear chance in the first half.
However, holders came back strongly in the second half and there were moves which initially showed some hope of a goal. Pranotosh saved the Abahani blushes as he slammed the all important goal in the 61st minute of the proceedings.
Abahani made number of attempts to increase the tally but Shuktara defence remained vigil not allowing any space for the Abahani strikers.
With this win, Abahani retained the top slot in the league table with 43 points while bottom-ranked Shuktara JS had to remain with seven points with both sides taking part in 15 matches.
In the day's other match, Mohammedan Sporting Club beat Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra by 3-0 goals at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Shakil Ahmed scored a brace in the 85th and 90th minutes while Nasir Uddin netted the other goal in the 64th minute for Mohammedan SC.
After the day's feat, the black and white Motijheel outfit collected 39 points, four points adrift of league leaders Abahani Limited, while Muktijoddha Sangsad KC remained at 14 points, both having played 15 matches.
Today's (Friday's) matches: Sylhet Beanibazar SC vs Farashganj SC (Sylhet Stadium 5 pm) and Arambagh KS vs Sheikh Russell KC (BNS 5:00 pm).
