Abahani takes solo lead in B League

CHITTAGONG, June 5 (UNB): Abahani Limited advanced to the top slot in the first-ever professional football league (B League) beating hosts Chittagong Mohammedan SC by 2-1 goals at the MA Aziz Stadium in the port city of Chittagong today (Tuesday).
The first phase match between two teams ended in a goalless draw at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka last March.
After the day's feat, Dhaka Abahani Limited secured 22 points from 11 matches to take a solo lead in the league table, while two other title contenders--Dhaka Mohammedan SC and Sheikh Russell KC-- followed the league leader neck and neck collecting 21 points each from 11 outings.
Hosts Chittagong Moham-medan SC, which conceded a 1-2 defeat against Muktijoddha Sangsad KC in the return league opener in Dhaka on May 31, remained at their first phase credit of 17 points from 12 matches, conceding two successive defeats in the return league.
Farashganj SC earned a hard-fought 2-1-goal win over Khulna Abahani KC in the return league home match of the B. League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here today (Tuesday), reports UNB.
With the day's win, Farashganj SC improved their tally securing 14 points while Khulna Abahani Limited remained at 11 points, both playing 12 matches.
Earlier in the first phase, Farasganj SC edged past Khulna Abahani KC by a solitary goal.
In the day's match, Kabir Hossain and Mohammad Ronny scored one goal each for the winners while Razaul Hakim Pikul netted the lone goal for the losers. The winners led the first half 1-0.
Kabir put Farashganj SC ahead through a penalty during the injury time. Farashganj got a spot-kick as Khulna Abahani KC's Shahinur Rahman fouled opponent defender Mohammad Robin in the danger zone. Referee Mahbubur Rahman did not hesitate to award the penalty in favour of Farashganj SC (1-0).
After the breather, Pikul neutralised the team's margin for Abahani Limited in the 53rd minute by a superb shot from inside the D box off Ashiqul Islam right-wing cross (1-1).
Ronny scored the second and final goal for Farashganj SC in the 83rd minute form the vantage position after dodging past an opponent defender and then opponent custodian Moshiul off a pass form Khokon just from 10 yards from the D-box (1-2).
