Ajker Kagoj clinch crown

BOA Secretary General Kudubuddin Ahmed handing over champions trophy of the Fifth Meril Media Cup Football to Ajker Kagoj team manager at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Thursday.
Daily Ajker Kagoj clinched the Fifth Meril Media Cup Football title beating Satellite TV Channel BanglaVision by 2-0 goals in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Thursday, reports UNB.
Barik Anjam, a former player of Brothers Union Club, scored the first goal for Ajker Kagoj in the 9th minute of the first half by a superb shot, after dodging past opponent goal-keeper Kazi Sabir (1-0).
Bellal Hossain scored the second goal for Ajker Kagoj midway of the second half, off a Barik pass (2-0).
Later, Barik Anjam was adjudged the Man of the Final for his outstanding performance. Barik also received the tournament's highest scorer trophy with five goals in the tournament.
Shawkat Hossain Bahar of the runners-up BanglaVision was adjudged the Best Player of the Tournament.
The Daily Star, eliminated from the quarter-final stage, were named the most disciplined team in the tourney to earn the "fair play trophy".
Earlier, the New Nation finished third in the tournament, declared winners in a place-decider match as their opponents UNB did not turn up in time.
Earlier, BanglaVision booked a seat for the final beating UNB news agency by 3-2 goals in tiebreaker while Ajker Kagoj smartly reached the final eliminating New Nation by 2-0 goals in the semi-finals Tuesday.
Secretary General of the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Kutubuddin Ahmed was the chief guest in the day's final and handed over the trophies.
Senior member of BSJA and Director News and Programme of Kids Vision's of the USA Mahfuzur Rahman handed over a cash prize of Tk 5,000 to the champions, Tk 3,000 to the runners-up and Tk 1,500 to the third-placed team.
Chief Executive Officer of BOA Wali Ullah, General Secretary of Bangladesh Archery Federation Kazi Razibuddin Ahmed Chapal, Director of National Sports Council (NSC) Akbar Hossain, General Secretary of Bangladesh Handball Federation Asaduzzaman Kohinoor, Head of the Marketing of Square Toiletries Limited Malik Mohammad Saeed, BSJA President Monjurul Haque and General Secretary Syed Mohammad Mamun were also present.
A total of 24 teams took part in the fifth version of the Meril Media Cup Football, organised by Bangladesh Sports Journalists' Association (BSJA) and sponsored by Square Toiletries Limited.
Teams: Ajker Kagoj- Arif Sohel, Arif Rahman, Barik Anjam, Riazur Rahman, Biplab Biswas, Mahmud Shaon, Shamsuzzaman, Mohiuddin Palash, Belal Hossain, Ali Imam Sumon, Julfikar Rasel and Aminur Rahman Taj.
BanglaVision - Sekandar Ali, Jobair Ahmed, Mahfuzur Rahman, Abdul Kader Bhuiyan, Shawkat Hossain Bahar, Hasibur Rahman Mukti, Asif Aktaruzzaman, Ahsanul Haq Asif, Saifur Rahman Chowdhury, Kazi Sabir, Shahid Khan and Galman Shafi.
