All set for nat’l athletics launch

The AKM Shamsuzzoha Smriti 39th National Athletics Championship begins at the country's premier sports venue-Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city today (Thursday), reports UNB.

State Minister for LGRD and Co-operatives Moshiur Rahman Ranga, MP, will inaugurate the three-day meet named after Independence award winner and former member of parliament from Narayanganj AKM Shamsuzzoha.

Some 600 athletes from across the country are expected to compete in the national meet organised by Bangladesh Athletic Federation (BAF).

BAF President ASM Ali Kabir will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony Saturday (September 12) at the same venue. Member of AKM Shamsuszzoha Foundation and Grandson of AKM Shamsuzzoha Imtenan Osman (Ayon) will be the special guest on the occasion.

BAF General Secretary M Ibrahim Chengish disclosed this at a press conference at the BNS conference room Wednesday.

Member of AKM Shamsuzzoha Foundation Imtenan Osman (Ayon Osman), BAF Vice President Shah Alam and BAF Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman and General Secretary of Narayanganj Rifles Club Khaled Haider Khan Kajol also addressed the press conference.

Representative of the meet's sponsor Ayon Osman handed over a cheque for Tk 0.80 million (8 lakh) to the officials of Bangladesh Athletic Federation at the function.

The athletes who will create national record in the ensuing meet will be awarded with a cash prize money of Tk 5,000.
