The Runner Group 29th Bangladesh Amateur Golf Championship began at the Kurmitola Golf Club of Dhaka Cantonment Tuesday, reports UNB.
Chief of Air Staff Air Marshall Muhammad Enamul Bari inaugurated the four-day competition, organised by Bangladesh Golf Federation, at a colourful opening ceremony on the club premises.
Chairman of the tournament sponsor Runner Group Hafizur Rahman Khan and Vice-chairman Mozammel Hossain were also present on the occasion.
Security Adviser to the Prime Minister Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony Saturday (March 8) and he will distribute prizes among the winners.
Prior to the opening ceremony, Secretary General of Bangladesh Golf Federation Brigadier General GM Quamrul Islam disclosed the details of the tournament at a press conference on the club premises in the afternoon.
Vice-chairman of the Tournament Organising Committee Brig Gen (retd) Salim Akhar, Tournament's Director Brig Gen (retd) Abidur Reza Khan, Managing Director of Runner Group Brig Gen (retd) Shafiquzzaman and joint secretary of Bangladesh Golf Federation and CEO of Kurmitola Golf Club Colonel Sardar Hassan Kabir were also present at the press conference.
A record number of 180 golfers from 10 countries-Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and hosts Bangladesh-are taking part in the regular international golf meet of the country.
Four events-Amateur Team event, Individual event, Ladies team event and Friendship Cup-are included in this year's golf meet.
Eight players-Sajib Ali, Mohammad Ismail, Mohammad Nazim, Mohammad Sagor (Men's Team), Nasima Akter Shiva, Zakia, Liza and Sonia (Women' s Team) - are representing Bangladesh in the meet.
Bangladesh finished runners-up in the just concluded SAARC Golf Tournament held in Kolkata.
