Bangladesh reached the final of the six-team Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament beating favourite Thailand by a solitary goal in the second semifinal at the flood-lit Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Friday, reports UNB.
Bangladesh will face all-win Malaysia in the final of the prestigious football tournament of the country tomorrow (Sunday) at 5:00 pm at the same venue.
In the day's semis, defender Mohammad Nasir Uddin scored the all-important goal for Bangladesh in the 40th minute by a close range flying flick from goalmouth melee, off a right side corner kick the day's playmaker and captain Mamunul Islam Mamun amid cheers from some 35,000 soccer crazy fans at the big bowl and millions of TV viewers.
Bangladesh dominated the first half 1-0.
Mamunul Islam Mamun, who perfectly discharged his midfield duties on the day to win the heart of overwhelming audiences, missed a golden chance to score in the very 5th minute. His weak left-footer from the middle of the D- box, off a Sohel Rana's pass from the left flank, went out of play near the side post.
Again in the 19th minute, Hamanta Vincent Biswas spoiled another golden opportunity as he failed to connect the ball from vintage position, off a brilliant minus of winger Zahid Hossain.
Thai goalkeeper Yos Somporan saved his castle brilliantly foiling a header of Zahid Hasan Emilyi off a throw-in by Rayhan Hasan in the 25th minute.
Besides, Emily and Sohel Rana managed two close calls in the 11th and 24th minute respectively.
In the second half, the visiting side showed their highest skill with forceful counter-attack tactics as well as game techniques. Thailand mostly controlled the ball in the mid-20 minutes period of the second half. They created some suitable opportunity, but Bangladesh defenders were also equal to the task in foiling all the attacks.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith witnessed the day's semifinal while chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Youth and Sports Ministry Zahid Ahsan Russell, Bangladesh Football Federation President Kazi M Salahuddin and Hamim Group Chairman AK Azad Chowdhury were introduced to both teams prior to the match.
