A college student in China’s Guangdong province leaped to his death after losing more than $3,000 gambling on the World Cup. China’s state media identified the deceased only by his surname Lin, a 2nd-year student in a local college. State media reports, published on Tuesday, said Lin, a passionate gambler, jumped from the 7th floor of a building on his campus on Monday. ‘I heard him say ‘do not force me’ and ‘give me two more days and I’ll return you the money’, the Information Times reported citing a witness. The newspaper quoted the witness as saying. ‘He talked on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I saw him hang up and stand up and then all on a sudden he just disappeared,’ the witness, a female student, said. Lin was rushed to hospital in Panyu in Guangdong in southern China. Doctors were not able to revive him, the newspaper report said. Another student described as a classmate of Lin’s said the gambler had lost nearly 20,000 yuan ($3,200) in bets on several WC games. ‘We heard that he borrowed quite a lot of money and the interest rate was rather high,’ said the student. China has millions of football fans, some of who are both devoted viewers and passionate gamblers, according to AFP.
