NEW DELHI, Oct 7 (AP): Alicia Coutts of Australia has won her third
individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, winning the 100-meter butterfly in the opening event on the fourth night of the swimming program.
While much of the pre-finals talk Thursday revolved around stomach illnesses affecting a number of swimmers, Coutts didn't seem bothered in finishing the race in 57.53 seconds. England's Ellen Gandy was second in 58.06 while Jemma Lowe Wales took the bronze in 58.42.
Coutts won her previous golds in the 200-meter individual medley and 100 freestyle.
It was the sixth straight time that an Australian woman has won the 100 butterfly.
Brent Hayden gave Canada another gold medal with victory in the 100 freestyle in a time of 47.98 seconds. Simon Burnett of England was second in a time of 48.54 while pre-race favorite and fastest qualifier Eamon Sullivan of Australia took the bronze in 48.69. Burnett said was "absolutely thrilled" with the silver. "I knew Brent would be very hard to beat and I just tried to stay strong," he said. "I can't believe it. Training has been going really well and it's all come together tonight." Rebecca Adlington of England, one of the swimmers affected by the stomach bug, was to swim the 800 freestyle later Thursday. She is the Olympic champion in that event and over 400 meters.
