Czech tennis chief taken into custody on fraud charges

PRAGUE, March 01 (AFP): A Prague court said it had taken Czech Tennis Federation (CTS) head Ivo Kaderka into custody on Thursday on fraud charges over an alleged abuse of government subsidies.
The 60-year-old Kaderka, the CTS head since 1998 and Tennis Europe president since 2020, is facing 10 years in prison if convicted.
"Mr Kaderka is in custody," Iva Kanakova, spokeswoman for the Prague 7 district court, told.
Police charged five people and five companies over an abuse of subsidies provided by the government to the CTS.
CTS supervisory board member Vojtech Flegl, a former professional tennis player, was also taken into custody.
Kanakova said the move was designed to prevent witness intimidation.
The public Czech Radio said the CTS led by Kaderka had siphoned off substantial sums of money to a club and companies run by Flegl.
