England's bid to bat out the day and seal a draw in the third Test stuttered in the morning session as India removed both Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, reports BBC.
The pair had survived a tricky opening spell from the seamers and spinner Anil Kumble, adopting a defensive approach in adding 23 runs in the first hour.
But Strauss (32) edged RP Singh to slip and Kumble had Cook (43) caught at leg gully to leave England 126-2 at lunch.
It means the hosts have little hope of chasing down 500 to level the series.
And with India's bowlers hitting their straps from ball one, their prospects of eking out a draw lay in the hands of a middle order that has failed to fire all series.
Sree Santh served warning of some terrific bowling from the tourists with the very first delivery, getting one to swing back into Cook's pads that was only just missing leg-stump.
However, Cook and Strauss dug in well, refusing to play at anything wide of off-stump and getting firmly behind the straighter deliveries as they took their opening stand to 79.
Even two good lbw shouts from Zaheer Khan, the first against Cook going down leg and the second hitting Strauss outside the line, could not break their concentration and it looked like the openers might get to lunch unscathed.
Singh's introduction provided an immediate breakthrough, though, Strauss suffering a lapse in concentration and edging an attempted force off the back foot to VVS Laxman at slip.
And when Strauss fell three overs later, clipping a leg glance straight to Laxman at leg gully, England were tottering.
But Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan mixed up good defence with the odd boundary before lunch, Vaughan in particular driving a couple superbly through the covers.
He needed a life a quarter of an hour before the break, though, Rahul Dravid shelling a relatively simple chance at slip off Kumble with Vaughan on 18.
The England skipper and Pietersen went off hoping to forge on after lunch to give their team any chance of denying the Indians a 2-0 series win.
