CINCINNATI, Aug 20 (AFP): World number one Roger Federer crushed James Blake 6-1, 6-4 to win his 50th career title with a resounding victory Sunday at the Cincinnati Masters.
The Swiss star heads into the US Open, the year's final Grand Slam event starting August 27, with his fifth title of the season, achieved by beating the ninth-seeded American for the seventh time in his career without a loss.
"I definitely played my best," Federer said. "I had to play my best to beat James."
Federer's 11 career Grand Slam titles are three shy of the all-time record of 14 set by Pete Sampras.
"It was a great week," Federer said. "I was very happy and I'm obviously very excited going into the US Open."
Federer, who won his first title at Milan in 2001, will be seeking his third Grand Slam crown of the year having won the Australian Open in January and his fifth Wimbledon crown in a row last month.
Federer improved to 45-6 on the season and stands 12-1 in finals played in US venues, including three US Open crowns.
"Everything felt good until I ran into Roger," Blake said.
"Fifty titles is pretty good."
