Flintoff rattles South Africa's chase

EDGBASTON, Aug 2 (Cricinfo): The fourth day of this gripping Test exploded into life as Andrew Flintoff's rapid yorkers removed two key wickets and left the South African camp fuming. Neil McKenzie and Jacques Kallis lost sight of deliveries from the Pavilion End as the visitors reached 111 for 4 at tea, after being set 281 to clinch the series, with Graeme Smith standing firm on an unbeaten 55. Paul Collingwood extended his resurgent century to 135 during the morning session to set up the enthralling finale.

South Africa made steady, and increasingly confident, progress as Smith and McKenzie added 65 for the first wicket. Boundaries began to flow - both off pace and spin - but Flintoff made the breakthrough in his fourth over when McKenzie failed to sight a yorker, getting struck on the boot in front of off stump as he turned away. It almost boiled over eight overs later when a screaming, low full toss thudded into the top of Kallis's leg as he, too, turned away for cover. Steve Davis made the correct decision, but Kallis was almost apoplectic, a feeling matched by Mickey Arthur on the balcony. However, it was excellent execution from Flintoff, who had the same effect against Kallis in the first innings before extracting him with his pinpoint yorker.

Life was no easier at the other end as Panesar started to find some bite and turn, both off the pitch and out of the rough. He ripped a couple past Hashim Amla's outside edge before firing in an arm-ball, trapping him in front of leg stump although there was a hint of doubt about the height.

Tea South Africa 314 for 111 for 4 (Smith 55*, de Villiers 9*) need 170 more runs to beat England 231 and 363 (Collingwood 135, Pietersen 94, Morkel 4-97)
