The five-day American Express Bangladesh Open 2010 Professional Golf Championship kicks off at the Kurmitola Golf Club in the city today (Monday).
The tournament organised in association with Bangladesh Golf Federation will be sponsored by private commercial bank City Bank.
120 top professional golfers from home and abroad will take part in the event carrying total prize money of Tk 3 million organisers said at a press conference in the city Saturday.
"Golf as a game is in need of a bit more exposure to the larger populace of Bangladesh," said Aziz Al Kaiser, Chairman of City Bank on the occasion.
"Golf is one of the lifestyle activities greatly enjoyed by American Express Card members around the world as well as in Bangladesh," said Sohail R K Hossain, Acting Managing Director of City Bank, adding, "Through the sponsorship of the tournament, we are looking forward to deepening that relationship".
The tournament is also significant because it marks the return of Professional Golf Tour of India or PGTI to Bangladesh- the organisers said citing that 10 top PGTI golfers have registered to participate in the event.
The first day of the event would feature the Pro-Am event.
