India make England work for runs

August 22, 2007 00:00:00

England compiled 66 for 1 from 16 overs after being put into bat in the first one-day international against India, reports BBC.
After a quiet start Matt Prior advanced down to hit Zaheer Khan for six, but got a leading edge to mid-on in the left-arm seamer's next over.
Alastair Cook hit three fours and was on 35, but it was unspectacular from England, with only five boundaries.
Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla earned a place for India, while England welcomed back Andrew Flintoff and Ravi Bopara.
Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid won the toss on an overcast day at the Rose Bowl and put England in to bat as the first of seven ODIs got underway. There were suggestions that batting first would be the better option here, given that the ball tends to dart around under lights, but Dravid reckoned conditions would help his fast bowlers early on, while the ball would probably come on to the bat better later in the evening. There were also chances of rain later, which might have been a factor in Dravid's decision, according to website cricinfo.
Given the conditions, it wasn't a surprise that India left out Ramesh Powar, and decided to go in with just one spinner in Piyush Chawla. England omitted Owais Shah, who had been their leading batsman in the series against West Indies, scoring 138 runs at an average of 46.
In eight previous ODIs at this ground, the team chasing has won four times, including in the only day-night game, when Pakistan chased down a target of 272 against England last year.
