India sanctions $15.2m for 2010 Games security

MUMBAI, Mar 8 (Reuters): The India government has sanctioned 782.6 million rupees ($15.2 million) to beef up security at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi next year.

"A total of 782.6 million rupees (78.26 crore rupees) has been sanctioned to the Delhi police to procure additional security equipment like X-ray scanners... specifically for the Commonwealth Games 2010," an unnamed Home ministry official told PTI agency Sunday.

Organisers said last week that they would adopt security measures similar to those used at last year's Beijing Olympic Games, allaying fears the attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Pakistan could scupper the event.
