The two-day 34th UCB National Athletics Championship concluded Saturday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium with Masudul Karim emerging as the fastest man while Nazmun Nahar Beauty the fastest woman, reports UNB.
Masudul Karim of Bangladesh Army clinched the gold medal of the meet's hot favourite event men's 100-metre sprint with a timing of 10.70 seconds while Nazmun Nahar Beauty of BJMC won the gold medal of women's 100-metre sprint clocking 11.90 seconds.
Bangladesh Army clinched the top slot securing 14 gold, 16 silver and six bronze medals, Ansar & VDP finished distant 2nd collecting seven gold, six silver and three bronze medals while Daffodil University, Dhaka were in the third position with four gold and three bronze medals.
Managing Director of meet sponsor United Commercial Bank Ltd M Shahjahan Bhuiyan was the chief guest at the day's closing function and distributed prizes. Federation President ATM Hayetuzzaman Khan and General Secretary M Shah Alam were also present.
Three national records were created in the two-day national meet with Rawshan Ara Putul bettering the national record twice in the women's 1500-metre and 3000-metre races one on each day while Al Amin making the record in the men's long jump on the first day.
On the first day (Friday), Rowshanara Putul of Ansar and VDP set a new national mark in the very second event clinching the gold medal of women's 1500-metre race with a timing of 4:50.30 seconds bettering the previous record of 4:51.73 seconds made by Rahima Khatun in 1995.
Al Amin of Bangladesh Navy set a new national mark in the men's long jump also Friday covering the distance of 7.61 metres to better the old mark of 7.59 metres made by Bony Amin in 1995.
Putul made the only record on the 2nd day in the women's 3000-metre race clocking 11:07.10 second to improve the event's old mark of 11:08.15 seconds made by Halima Khantun Bithi in 2003.
A total of 692 athletes, including 531 men and 161 women from 81 teams of different districts, divisions, education boards, services and organisations took part in the 36 events of the meet -- 22 for men and 14 for women.
