SYDNEY, Sept 23 (AFP): Kenyan runner Julius Maritim won the Sydney Marathon for the third consecutive year Sunday, crossing the finish line in a record time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 38 seconds.
Maritim, who finished six minutes ahead of the rest of the pack, led from the 12 kilometre (7.4 mile) mark of the race.
"The first five kilometres were fairly cold, but it warmed up towards the end and I'm really glad to beat my previous time," he said on crossing the finish line in front of the Sydney Opera House.
Maritim was followed by fellow Kenyans who came second and third; Philip Muia running a time of 02:21:54 for second and Nicholas Merica timing 02:24:22 for third place.
The first woman to complete the course, which includes running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, was Naoko Tsuchiya of Japan who came home in a time of two hours, 43 minutes and 10 seconds.
She was followed by Australians Eliza Mayger (02:46:34) and Verity Tolhurst (02:52:13).
