MAGURA, June 05: A five-kilometre long German flag, the world's largest, made by a local farmer out of his World Cup fever was exhibited at a function in Magura on Tuesday, much to the enchantment of the viewers.

The flag measuring five kilometres in length held German diplomat Karen Wiwjorra and German embassy cultural and educational officer Tamara Kabir spellbound among other distinguished guests.

Amjad Hossen, a farmer by profession and resident of Nishchindapur village in Magura sadar upazila, is the maker of the flag.

Earlier, Amjad made another German flag measuring 3.5 km and costing Tk 0.2 million in 2004, which also created huge enthusiasm among the public.

For this, the then German ambassador in Bangladesh accorded a reception to Amzad in Magura.

The German flag he has made this year has cost him Tk 0.3 million and he managed the money by selling land. Contacted, Karen said, "A man in an underdeveloped village of Bangladesh can be so blind supporter of Germany was beyond my expectation. His selfless love for Germany has overjoyed me."

"I shall take initiative to send Amzad to Germany," she added.

Tamara said, "By making such a large flag Amzad has consolidated the relationship between Germany and Bangladesh. We have come to Magura to show him our gratitude."

When she was requested to set up a football academy in Magura with the support of Germany, she said, "I shall try heartily to do this."

Amzad said, "Twenty years back, I was attacked by a critical disease and I left the hope of life.
