HOUSTON, USA, Jun 19 (AP): Jared Borgetti headed in a goal from 5 yards out in the eighth minute of overtime to give Mexico a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal Sunday.
Mexico will face Guadeloupe, a 2-1 winner over Honduras in the second game Sunday, Thursday in Chicago in the semifinals. The defending champion United States will play Canada in the other semifinal.
Borgetti, who leads Mexico with 43 career goals in international play, took a crossing pass in front of the goal from Adolfo Bautista to score the winner.
Costa Rica's Allan Aleman was ejected in the 43rd minute when he got his second yellow card for vehemently arguing a non-call. That forced Costa Rica to play with 10 men the rest of the way in regulation.
Moments after Borgetti scored, Costa Rica lost Alvaro Saborio to a red card because of a hard foul. In the final minute of overtime, Mario Camacho received a red card for a hard foul and Costa Rica finished the game with eight players.
On Saturday, the Americans beat Panama 2-1 to advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals despite some sloppy defense late in the game that led to a goal in the 84th minute.
Those discussions will take place before Thursday night's semifinal at Soldier Field in Chicago against Canada, which was impressive in beating Guatemala 3-0 in Saturday's first quarterfinal at Gillette Stadium.
Donovan scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and Carlos Bocanegra connected in the 62nd. With 32 goals, Donovan moved within two of Eric Wynalda's US career record. It was the 10th Gold Cup goal for Donovan, who moved ahead of Wynalda into second place in the tournament's history, two behind Mexico's Luis Roberto Alves.
Donovan also scored on a penalty kick in injury time in last Tuesday's 4-0 win over El Salvador in group play. That gave the United States a 2-0 lead and momentum.
Blas Perez scored for 57th-ranked Panama, which lost to the United States on penalty kicks in the 2005 final of the Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Perez's goal was the first allowed by the United States in this year's tournament. The Americans are seeking their fourth Gold Cup title.
