Neymar set to miss all group stage matches

Brazil targets his knockout return

Brazil are prepared to exercise maximum caution over Neymar's fitness at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the veteran forward now likely to miss all three group-stage matches as he continues his recovery from a calf injury. The Selecao are focused on ensuring the 32-year-old is fully fit for the knockout rounds rather than risking an early comeback.

According to an ESPN report cited by Goal.com, Brazil's medical staff are unwilling to rush Neymar's return from a grade-two calf injury suffered while playing for Santos on May 17. The striker was unavailable for Brazil's tournament opener against Morocco, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The team management believes that any premature return could jeopardise Neymar's participation in the remainder of the World Cup. As a result, he is expected to remain sidelined for Saturday's clash against Haiti and could miss the entire group stage, including the June 24 encounter with Scotland in Miami.

Brazil's strategy is centred on preparing Neymar for the knockout rounds, though that approach could be influenced by the team's performances and results during the group phase.

While Neymar has increased the intensity of his gym-based rehabilitation, he has yet to rejoin full team training on the pitch. The forward may soon begin individual field sessions, but he will only be cleared for full training once he is completely free of pain.

Having been out of competitive action for more than a month, concerns also remain about his match sharpness and readiness to perform at the highest level.

Brazil's medical team has not ruled out conducting fresh imaging tests to assess the healing process. The outcome of those examinations could determine whether Neymar's reintegration into the squad is accelerated or whether he continues with rehabilitation.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has reiterated the importance of Neymar to the squad while stressing that the player's health remains the priority.
