Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined the opening ceremony of "Notun Kuri Sports," a talent search initiative designed to foster the physical and mental development of children and adolescents, reports bdnews24.com.
The event began at Sylhet District Stadium at 4pm on Saturday in the presence of young participants.
This nationwide competition marks a major step toward scouting gifted youngsters, through which the government aims to develop top-tier athletes from the grassroots level.
The Directorate of Sports is implementing the scheme under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, following a key pledge in the BNP election manifesto.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic 1980s talent search programme "Notun Kuri," this new initiative focuses on identifying sporting talent across the country.
State Minister for Sports Aminul Haque described the initiative as a landmark move, noting that it will serve as a strong platform for producing the next generation of skilled athletes.
The primary objective is to discover and nurture the latent abilities of children aged between 12 and 14, providing them with state-sponsored opportunities to excel.
The competition will feature eight disciplines, including cricket, football, kabaddi, athletics, chess, badminton, swimming, and martial arts.
