DELRAY BEACH, Feb 24 (AFP): American Sam Querrey survived a scare from Guillermo Canas before advancing with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 win in the first round of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships Monday.

The world number 34 Querrey, who defeated Argentina's Canas last year in the Las Vegas semis en route to his first ATP World Tour title, needed just one break of serve in the second set to close the match.

Also on Monday, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez recorded a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over fifth-seeded Steve Darcis of Belgium.

The loss is Darcis' fifth in as many tournaments this season including last week where he was the defending champion in Memphis.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Frenchman Florent Serra defeated Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), Austrian Stefan Koubek bested American Bobby Reynolds, 6-4, 6-3, and Christophe Rochus of Belgium toppled Croat Roko Karanusic, 6- 3, 6-4

Chilean Paul Capdeville faced American Robert Kendrick in the late match.
