MADRID, Jun 8 (AFP): Spanish giants Real Madrid signed a marketing agreement with a New York-based sports marketing group to expand their brand and help the development of football in the United States.
The contract with SCP (Sports Capital Partnres) Worldwide - a consulting and investment services firm for sports teams and media assets - includes plans for the creation of Real Madrid football academies in the US, broadcasting rights to the club's television content, and the team's participation in friendliness over the next several years.
"The innovative agreement confirms Real Madrid's desire to push its brand in the North American market and to support the efforts of the country's football bodies - MLS, USSF, AYSO - to increase the popularity of the sports with its values, experience, and prestige," the Spanish club said in a statement.
SCP Worldwide is a sports, entertainment, and media company founded in 2002 that owns the MLS' Real Salt Lake soccer franchise and that recently purchased the NHL's St. Louis Blues.
Preparations are already underway for the first major event, which will take place in New York City in July.
Real Madrid organised a US tour last August and one of their star players, former England captain David Beckham, has signed to play for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy next season.
