BUCHAREST, Sept 21 (AP): Romania defeated India in the Davis Cup World Group playoff match, taking an insurmountable 3-1 lead Sunday after Victor Hanescu beat Prakash Amritraj 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the reverse singles.
"It was more difficult to play Amritraj. I played tactically, he is a serve and volley player," said Hanescu, who broke his opponent's serve in every set and also won Friday against Somdev Devvarman.
Amritraj, who prefers faster services than clay, frequently came to the net in a failed bid to dominate play. The Indian regularly made unforced errors and only won half of his points on first service.
India got its point Saturday in the doubles when Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes defeated Horia Tecau and Adrian Cruciat.
Victor Crivoi, who beat Amritraj on Friday, faces Devvarman in the other reverse singles match.
